Most anglers like to keep their prime fishing spots a secret but you don’t have to reinvent the flywheel to get a good catch. We’ve listed the five best fishing locations near Macedon, NY, so you can spend more time fishing and less time searching for your honey hole.

5 of the Best Fishing Spots Near Macedon, NY

1. Erie Canal

If you’re looking for action-packed freshwater fishing, you don’t need to go far to crank up the fun. You can find cold water walleye in the Erie Canal, which flows through Macedon. This fish is known to put up a good fight and will keep you reeling until the end.

You can access the canal and find public parking in Macedon Canal Park.

2. Oatka Creek

Trout seekers can try Oatka Creek in Scottsville. The state stocks the creek with brown trout so you’re likely to have more luck with a catch. The creek, a tributary of the Genesee River, is about a 45-minute drive from Macedon and a beautiful spot for fly fishing.

Anglers will need to follow rules for catch and release only from October 16 through March 31. They can only use artificial lures during this time.

3. Ganargua Creek

Also known as Mud Creek, Ganargua Creek might look a bit murky but it’s a 34-mile prime fishing spot that travels through Macedon. It’s home to largemouth and smallmouth bass along with catfish, pike, and others.

You can also find places to fish along smaller brooks and creeks that feed into the Ganargua Creek, like Trap Brook in Macedon.

4. Hundred Acre Pond

A quick 30-minute drive from Macedon will bring you to Hundred Acre Pond in Henrietta, NY. You can find pike, bass, perch, and black crappie, among other species.

When the weather gets frigid, don’t put away your poles. The pond is great for ice fishing for perch and sunfish when there’s a safe layer of ice.

4. Canandaigua Outlet

The Canandaigua Outlet empties into the Erie Canal near Lyons, which is about a 30-minute drive from Macedon. It is stocked each year with brown trout. Anglers can use artificial lures only to catch and release them beginning October 16 through March 31.

The outlet is also full of smallmouth and largemouth bass, rockbass, pike, and other species.  There are plenty of options to fish along the waterway. Quick trips from Macedon, such as the spots near Phelps, Shortsville, and Manchester, might net you a good haul.

5. Irondequoit Creek

Irondequoit Creek empties into Irondequoit Bay on Lake Ontario and it’s one of the best spots for rainbow trout in New York State. The NY Department of Environmental Conservation annually stocks the stream with rainbow trout and brown trout.

You can find several spots to fish along this creek as it travels through the area. Try the portion that travels through Powder Mills Park in Pittsford, NY, about a 20-minute drive from Macedon.
